Italian PM Giorgia Meloni Considering Resignation

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is reportedly seriously considering resigning in March next year, fuelling speculation in the country’s political circles. According to reports in national newspapers, she may take the step shortly after a European summit scheduled to be held in Rome.
According to Italian media outlets La Repubblica and Fanpage, the move is not a sudden government decision but a strategic political plan. The idea is to shorten the government’s term before it expires naturally, paving the way for an early election.
Reports say Meloni presented the proposed strategy at a meeting with senior coalition partners and allies, including Antonio Tajani, Matteo Salvini and Maurizio Lupi. Under the plan, she could submit her resignation to the country’s president shortly after the European summit concludes in late March.
The main objective is to hold an early national election on the same day as, or around the time of, local elections scheduled for late spring or June. The ruling party reportedly hopes to avoid prolonged political uncertainty by opting for a swift election campaign.
Speculation about Meloni’s possible resignation has prompted increased activity among the ruling coalition and opposition parties. With a possible vote in June in mind, major parties have accelerated the process of selecting mayoral candidates in major cities, including Milan, Rome, Naples and Turin.
However, political analysts say no confirmed resignation announcement has been made. For now, the idea remains at the stage of preliminary discussions on political strategy. The prospect of an early election will depend on the country’s constitutional provisions and the president’s approval.
