Kalirhat-Kashiyabari Road in Ruins, Leaving Locals in Severe Distress

Aditmari Upazila in Lalmonirhat has long been grappling with a severe infrastructure crisis concerning a vital two-kilometer road stretching from Kalirhat to Kashiyabari. Connecting two wards within Durgapur Union, this crucial route remains unpaved and severely neglected decades after independence. Despite repeated complaints and appeals submitted by residents over the years, no concrete steps have been taken to improve its dilapidated condition, triggering widespread anger and frustration across the community.

Serving as the sole reliance for approximately 3,500 daily commuters, the pathway has effectively degraded into a hazardous death trap. An on-the-spot investigation revealed that soil has eroded across multiple sections, leaving behind dangerous craters that trap rainwater and cause heavy waterlogging during the monsoon season. Consequently, the route becomes entirely impassable, forcing students to risk their personal safety daily as they wade through deep mud and water to reach their schools.

The economic and social tolls on the surrounding population are profound, particularly affecting education, healthcare, and local agriculture. Students attending the local primary school and madrasa face immense hardships, while medical emergencies demand that sick patients be carried on shoulders or walked miles out of their way. Furthermore, local farmers suffer heavy financial losses because poor transport prevents trucks from accessing the area, forcing them to pay double the time and costs to haul produce.

Voicing their deep frustration, residents highlighted the glaring disparity in regional development compared to neighboring areas. ‘All the surrounding roads have been paved, yet ours remains neglected, causing immense suffering,’ locals stated, pointing out that a standard ten Taka journey now costs over fifty Taka in hiked transport fares alongside exhausting detours. These compounding challenges leave families struggling even to recover their basic production expenses.

Echoing these urgent appeals, college student Hafizur Rahman explained that vehicle accidents and overturned transports frequently cause serious injuries, while farmer Rahmat Ali stressed that their inability to transport paddy and vegetables directly prevents them from securing fair market prices. Addressing these grievances, Aditmari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Gunjan Biswas stated that he is aware of the situation and will verify if the road holds an official code, promising priority roadwork to alleviate public suffering if density criteria are met.
