Kishoreganj’s Haors Emerge as a Unique Retreat for Nature Lovers and Travellers
Kishoreganj’s haor region is emerging as a popular tourist destination, drawing visitors with its vast monsoon waters, floating villages, open skies and boat trips. To make haor tourism safer and easier, Kishoreganj District Police has set up tourist shelters at key entry points, including Nikli Beribadh, Balikhola and Chamra river ports. The shelters provide rest areas, haor maps, boat and fare information, contact numbers for boatmen, hotel, resort and restaurant details, emergency contacts and first-aid kits.
The initiative was taken under the plan of Superintendent of Police Mohammad Mizanur Rahman. Following several robbery incidents earlier this year, police arrested several suspected robbery leaders. Boat owners and operators had earlier been advised not to operate after 5pm. Boats now operate in the haor until 8pm.
Visitors are exploring Itna, Mithamoin and Ashtagram, as well as attractions such as the Itna-Mithamoin-Ashtagram all-weather road, Dilli Akhra and Qutub Shahi Mosque. Police also plan to promote year-round tourism. Plans include temporary camps during the dry season, training local youths as tourist guides and reserving rooms for students at hotels and resorts.
According to district police, tourist numbers in the haor have nearly doubled this year. Kishoreganj-4 MP Advocate Fazlur Rahman said police action had improved security and that the haor is now safe for tourists. Information and Broadcasting State Minister Yaser Khan Chowdhury said coordinated efforts could turn the Kishoreganj haor into a major tourist destination in Bangladesh and beyond.
