Mirza Fakhrul to Visit Ziaur Rahman and Khaleda Zia Graves Before Oath

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, the 23rd President of Bangladesh, will be sworn in on Friday evening at Bangabhaban’s Durbar Hall. Before the swearing-in event, he paid his respects at the tombs of former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia and former President Shaheed Ziaur Rahman at Zia Udyan in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar after Juma prayers. Amidst increased security precautions, dignitaries are expected to attend the event, including the departing President, the Prime Minister, the Chief Justice, cabinet members, and foreign ambassadors.

In Thursday’s presidential election at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, Mirza Fakhrul was announced as the winner. Of the 349 Members of Parliament, 343 valid votes were cast. After receiving 255 votes, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) A. M. M. Nasir Uddin announced Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir the winner of the election. Colonel (Retd.) Oli Ahmad of the 11-party alliance led by Jamaat defeated him with 88 votes. This is the nation’s first presidential election with several candidates in 35 years.

The newly elected President was congratulated by members of parliament after the announcement. Mirza Fakhrul was received by PM Tarique Rahman with a red rose and a handshake. The Leader of the Opposition and other MPs then congratulated him. In accordance with the relevant sections of the Presidential Elections Act of 1991, the Election Commission Secretariat published the official gazette late on Thursday night verifying the election results.
