Myanmar-Bangladesh Corridor Will Strengthen Bilateral Ties: Myanmar Ambassador
Myanmar is actively working with the Bangladesh government to strengthen cross-border trade and resume direct coastal shipping services connecting Chittagong Port with Yangon and Sittwe ports, stated Mr. Kyaw Soe Moe, Ambassador of Myanmar to Bangladesh. Speaking at an exchange meeting with Chittagong Chamber of Commerce & Industry (CCCI) leaders at the World Trade Centre, he highlighted Bangladesh as a key neighbor. He noted that recent discussions by Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in China regarding the China-Bangladesh Economic Corridor would fortify bilateral ties, while Myanmar’s ongoing energy projects could soon allow Bangladesh to import LNG and electricity.
The Ambassador emphasized that government-to-government and business-to-business engagements are essential to leverage bilateral relations for sustainable development and mutual growth. Key potential exports from Myanmar to Bangladesh include rice, ginger, rubber, and fish, while Bangladesh can export pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and readymade garments to Myanmar. Furthermore, dedicated initiatives are currently underway to establish direct flight connections linking Yangon with Dhaka and Chittagong to boost regional mobility, economic collaboration, and commercial activities between both nations.
Highlighting the immense economic potential, CCCI President Mohammad Amirul Huq stated that Myanmar is rich in natural resources, making closer business ties vital for expanding overall trade and investment. Pointing out Myanmar’s geographical proximity to Chittagong, he stressed that coastal shipping, improved road connectivity, and direct flights are indispensable for trade expansion. He added that Chittagong has transformed into a regional hub and the realization of the Bangladesh-Myanmar-China Economic Corridor will significantly expand both bilateral and global trade.
CCCI Senior Vice President Md. Amjad Hossain Chowdhury remarked that sustainable economic growth can be successfully achieved by utilizing mutual capabilities and individual comparative advantages. He expressed strong optimism that establishing joint ventures by Bangladeshi investors in Myanmar’s agriculture and fisheries sectors would yield significant mutual benefits. The high-level exchange meeting saw active participation from key business leaders, diplomats, and trade representatives who collectively affirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral economic cooperation.
The bilateral meeting concluded with a shared commitment from both delegations to swiftly execute the proposed transport and energy initiatives. Attendees included former CCCI President Mr. Ali Ahmed, former Senior Vice President Mr. M. A. Salam, former Director Mr. S. M. Abu Tayyeb, Counselor of the Myanmar Embassy Mr. Htet Myat Lwin, and Honorary Consul General of Myanmar Mr. A. H. M. Hakim Ali. Both sides reiterated that strengthening maritime, aviation, and trade channels will unlock unprecedented commercial opportunities for both neighboring countries.
