On Giving Sadaqah Money to a Wife’s Parents

Question: A few days ago, I faced a difficult situation. At the time, I made a mental vow that if Allah rescued me from the trouble, I would give some charity in the way of Allah. My in-laws are currently facing a financial crisis and are among those who may receive charity. My question is: Can I give charity to my father-in-law or mother-in-law?
Answer: A wife’s parents, siblings and other relatives do not fall into the category of people who are prohibited from receiving zakat or sadaqah. Therefore, if they are financially disadvantaged, they may be given charity.
In such cases, it is preferable not to tell them that the money or goods being given are charity. Rather, it is appropriate to give them as a gesture of goodwill or assistance. It is sufficient to have the intention of giving charity in one’s heart. If it is given as ordinary assistance or a gift, there is no need for any specific intention or concealment. It is sufficient to hope for a reward from Allah in return.
