Osmani Udyan to reopen after 10 years, Prime Minister to inaugurate

Prime Minister Mr. Tarique Rahman will formally inaugurate the historic Osmani Udyan, modernised at a cost of about Tk 50 crore, and the newly built “July Memorial Monument” there next week. After the inauguration and a gathering of distinguished guests, the park will be opened to the general public on the same day.

State Minister for Local Government Mr. Shahe Alam disclosed this yesterday at a preparatory meeting on the modernisation of Osmani Udyan and the inauguration of the July Memorial Monument, held in the conference room of the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives at the Secretariat. He chaired the meeting.

The State Minister said that, after remaining closed for nearly 10 years, city residents will finally get the opportunity to use the modernised Osmani Udyan. A special July Memorial Monument has been built in the park in memory of the July martyrs and the heroic fighters of July. It will give visitors a chance to remember the historic student-people uprising of July and August and the sacrifices of the martyrs.

Mr. Shahe Alam said the newly redesigned park has walking paths, facilities for spending time with family, a restaurant, a modern library, a designated play area for children, an artificial fountain and scenic water features.

He also said that Dhaka South City Corporation is continuing its work to enhance the beauty of this important site next to the Secretariat and to keep its environment pleasant.

Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Md Abdus Salam, the secretary of the Local Government Division, senior officials of the ministry and representatives of the organisations concerned were present at the preparatory meeting.
