President Calls for Strict Action Against Corrupt Individuals
President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called on the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to take strict action against corrupt individuals without considering their influence or status. He said, “No matter how influential a corrupt person is, they must be brought under the law through impartial and fair investigations.”
He made the call on Thursday when a delegation led by ACC Chairman Justice A.K.M. Asaduzzaman paid a courtesy call on the president at Bangabhaban. President’s Press Secretary Md. Sarwar Alam disclosed the information during a briefing.
During the meeting, the ACC chairman briefed the president on the commission’s overall activities, ongoing initiatives, and existing problems and challenges in carrying out its responsibilities. He also sought the president’s cooperation to make the commission’s efforts to combat corruption more effective.
The president said corruption has now become one of Bangladesh’s major problems due to prolonged misgovernance, irregularities and a lack of accountability. He said the country’s progress and bright future depend on combating and controlling corruption. The ACC must continue working with honesty and courage to curb corruption, he added.
The president urged the ACC to ensure the speedy legal disposal of a large number of long-pending cases and reduce delays in the judicial process. He particularly stressed the need for prompt investigations and strict action in cases involving serious corruption.
He also emphasised strengthening public awareness and campaign activities to develop anti-corruption values among people. He assured the commission of overall cooperation in effectively carrying out its constitutional and legal responsibilities.
Other members of the delegation included Commissioner (Investigation) Dr. Jahangir Alam Khan, Commissioner (Inquiry) Dr. Md. Sazzad Hossain Bhuiyan and Secretary Md. Saidur Rahman Khan. Secretaries from the President’s Office were also present during the meeting.
