Shakib to Face Imprisonment if He Returns Home

Shakib Al Hasan, Bangladesh’s celebrated all-rounder, faces serious legal risks and public criticism after virtually attending a meeting with former prime minister Sheikh Hasina. Government officials have stressed that celebrity status and wealth do not place anyone above the law. Mohammad Aminul Islam, chief prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, said Shakib is an accused in several cases, including the murder case of Rubel, a garment worker, filed at Adabor police station. Shakib and several family members and associates also face allegations linked to an alleged Tk256 crore stock-market manipulation scheme under investigation by the Anti-Corruption Commission.
Authorities have warned that Shakib could face detention if he returns to Bangladesh, depending on the status of the cases. If he remains abroad, the government could explore extradition mechanisms to bring him back for legal proceedings. State Minister for Sports Mohammad Aminul Haque said Shakib’s political association and support for Hasina have effectively ended his prospects of representing Bangladesh on home soil. Authorities have maintained that Shakib’s cricketing achievements do not exempt him from legal accountability. However, the allegations remain matters for the courts, and any imprisonment would depend on formal charges and a final conviction.
