Trump: US Reliance Weakened Europe’s Militaries

According to US President Donald Trump, Europe’s military forces have become weaker because of their long-standing reliance on the United States. Speaking at a rally in the suburbs of Las Vegas, Nevada, he criticised NATO’s European partners for depending too heavily on Washington for their defence. Trump said European nations’ reliance on the United States had prevented them from developing stronger militaries. “I’ve told them that this can’t go on,” he said.
Throughout his speech, Trump sharply criticised the policies of former President Joe Biden’s administration, claiming that its decisions had seriously weakened US military strength. He accused the administration of providing enormous amounts of financial and military assistance to other countries without sufficient compensation. He said the Biden administration had given everything away for free, referring to the roughly $350 billion in military assistance and weapons he said had been provided to Ukraine during Biden’s presidency. “Furthermore, $350 billion is undoubtedly a significant sum,” Trump said.
The US President opposed what he described as the unlimited distribution of American-made weapons and military equipment, arguing that wealthy European nations should pay for their own defence needs. “My policy is straightforward – I sell everything, and they are prepared to pay for it as well, because Europeans have plenty of money,” he added. Trump has repeatedly urged NATO’s European members to increase defence spending and reduce their reliance on the United States. His latest remarks further underscored his transactional approach to military alliances, in which European countries are expected to assume greater financial responsibility for their own defence while purchasing more US-made military equipment.
