Two Service Bridges of Dhowr-Ashulia was Inaugurated Yesterday

Two two-lane service bridges constructed from Dhour Mor to Ashulia under the Dhaka-Ashulia Elevated Expressway project are being opened to vehicular traffic today, Wednesday (September 2). This is the first section of the project to be opened for public use. Officials hope the opening will ease traffic movement on the Uttara-Ashulia route and reduce existing congestion to some extent.

Road Transport and Bridges, Railways and Shipping Minister Sheikh Robiul Alam will attend the inauguration ceremony on the Dhour Bridge today as the chief guest. Md. Masud Rana Shikdar, deputy director and public relations officer of the Bangladesh Bridge Authority, confirmed the matter. The two bridges have been constructed over the Turag River. Each is 3.71 kilometres long and two lanes wide. According to project sources, separate service bridges have been constructed alongside the main elevated roadway to ensure smooth movement of local and regional traffic. The design also took into consideration maintaining the natural flow of water in the Turag River.

Officials said construction of the approximately 3.71-kilometre service lane from Dhour Mor to Ashulia Bazar was completed last August. Asphalt paving, road markings and other necessary works were subsequently completed. As the new bridges will allow two-way traffic, it is expected that vehicles travelling from Uttara to Ashulia and from Ashulia towards Dhaka will move more smoothly.

The Dhaka-Ashulia Elevated Expressway is one of the country’s major ongoing infrastructure projects. Its main objective is to establish fast and uninterrupted road connectivity from the airport area through Abdullahpur and Ashulia to Baipayl and improve connectivity between the capital and the Savar-Ashulia industrial area. Construction of the project began in October 2022.

Meanwhile, the project’s cost and implementation period have recently been revised. Under the second revision, the project cost was increased by Tk 9,493 crore to Tk 27,046 crore, while the project duration was extended until June 2030. However, officials of the Planning Ministry said the main expressway is targeted to be opened to traffic by 2028.

According to the latest figures from the Bangladesh Bridge Authority, the project’s physical progress stood at around 65 percent as of June 2026. Officials have also been instructed to strengthen coordination and accelerate construction work to complete the project quickly.
