US Announces ‘Unprecedented’ Economic Measures Against Iran

The United States is preparing unprecedented new economic measures to further isolate Iran, with details to be announced next week, according to US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. In an interview with Newsmax, Mr. Bessent stated that in order to increase pressure in response to recent military operations, these actions will be carried out in conjunction with the continuance of the US naval blockade against Iran. According to US Defence Secretary Mr. Pete Hegseth, Washington is entirely capable of sustaining this embargo forever if needed to accomplish its geopolitical goals.
With military tensions continuing around Iranian ports and the crucial Strait of Hormuz, diplomatic attempts and ceasefire negotiations between the US and Iran are at a virtual standstill. Concerns over global supply have been heightened by the disruption of shipping in this vital oil transit route, maintaining geopolitical pressure on international markets, where Brent crude recently traded at $87 and WTI at $81.
Mr. Bessent’s upbeat comments on August 4, when he hinted at an approaching breakthrough to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, contrast sharply with the anticipated statement. Analysts caution that an extended naval blockade coupled with harsh economic penalties has the potential to further extend the conflict and raise uncertainty in the world’s energy markets.
