US Bans Chinese AI Firm DeepSeek from Civilian Government Systems

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has banned technology and products developed by Chinese artificial intelligence company DeepSeek from the IT systems of all civilian government agencies in the United States.
The order cites concerns that DeepSeek’s technology poses a serious threat to US national security. Authorities fear that sensitive user data could be accessed by the Chinese government and that the technology could create cybersecurity risks for government operations.
DeepSeek made headlines earlier this year after triggering major turmoil in the US stock market. The Chinese AI startup introduced advanced AI models at a much lower cost and with less data usage than many competing systems. In less than two hours, more than $1 trillion in market value was wiped out on Wall Street, while technology giants such as Nvidia suffered unprecedented share price declines.
Before the latest federal action, several US states, including New York and Tennessee, as well as federal agencies such as the Department of Commerce and the Navy, had already banned DeepSeek on government devices.
