Voting to Be Held in 1,050 Union Parishads in First Phase

Voting will be held in 1,050 union parishads (UPs) across the country in the first phase of the upcoming local government elections, Election Commission (EC) Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed has said. He shared the information with journalists at the Election Commission headquarters in Agargaon on Sunday (November 8).

Akhtar Ahmed said preparations for the union parishad elections were underway, adding that 1,050 UPs would go to the polls in the first phase. Union parishads under upazila headquarters would be given priority, he said.

He also said electronic voting machines (EVMs) would not be used in any future elections. However, the Election Commission has yet to make a final decision on what to do with the existing EVMs. The commission is also planning to collect citizens’ information from the age of six, he added.

According to the EC’s plan, the first phase of the union parishad elections will be held on January 21, 2027. The second phase is scheduled for February 4, the third for April 29, the fourth for May 13 and the fifth and final phase for May 27. The Election Commission said the election schedule for the first phase would be announced six weeks before voting.
