Fire at Submersible Pump in Kotalipara Triggers Curiosity Over Potential Gas Source

The sudden ignition of gas mixed with water from a submersible pump in Kotalipara, Gopalganj, has sparked widespread curiosity among residents. Locals have demanded an expert investigation to determine whether there are underground gas reserves in the area.
The incident occurred at a submersible pump installed by Kamrul Sheikh, a local hardware trader at Bhasai Bazaar in Bandhabari Union of the upazila. Late at night, fire ignited at the pipe’s mouth as soon as a gas lighter was struck. On Thursday, curious crowds gathered in front of his shop to witness the phenomenon.
Mr. Kamrul Sheikh stated that he had installed the pump at a depth of 280 feet about a year ago to supply water to fish-transporting vehicles. For the past week, the water output from the pump had decreased. On Wednesday night, out of curiosity, he held a gas lighter to the mouth of the pipe, and it caught fire. Following this, news of the event spread quickly throughout the area.
Tariq Molla, a college student, said, ‘We were astonished to see fire burning at the mouth of the pump. It has created various speculations in the area. The true situation will come to light if experts conduct tests to verify whether there is an underground gas source.’
Kotalipara Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Saif-ul-Arefin said, ‘After learning of the incident, I sent local land officials to the site to gather primary information. I will visit the spot on Friday to inspect the matter and take necessary measures following verification.’ However, expert testing has not yet confirmed the exact nature of the gas mixed with the pump water or its origin.
