Everyone Must Work Together for Peace, Democracy, and Development: State Minister for Housing and Public Works

Pirojpur, August 6: Ahmed Sohel Monjur, Member of Parliament for Pirojpur-2 and State Minister for Housing and Public Works, said the objectives of the July Mass Uprising must not be allowed to fail, urging everyone to work together to promote the country’s peace, democracy, and development.

He made the remarks on Thursday morning while addressing a relief distribution programme for families affected by natural disasters and other vulnerable groups, organised by the Nesarabad Upazila Administration, where he attended as the chief guest.

The State Minister alleged that during the previous Awami League government, enforced disappearances, killings, and political repression were carried out against leaders and activists of various political parties, while people’s rights and freedom of speech were curtailed. He claimed that the July Mass Uprising emerged from the student-led public movement in response to that situation and said the current government is working to fulfil the aspirations of the uprising.

He also said that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is working tirelessly to ensure balanced development across every region of the country. However, he alleged that vested interests are attempting to obstruct development projects and spread rumours to create confusion among the public, urging everyone to remain vigilant against such misinformation.

Mr. Monjur further alleged that during the previous government’s tenure, vast state resources were siphoned off abroad through corruption and money laundering. He said the current government has adopted a strict stance against corruption while implementing its electoral commitments and called for ensuring transparency and accountability at all levels, including in government offices.

Highlighting the need to prevent drug abuse, terrorism, and eve-teasing, the State Minister stressed the importance of building social resistance against such crimes. He said public cooperation, alongside law enforcement agencies and the administration, is essential to establishing a peaceful society. He also urged citizens to report any information related to such offences to the Officer-in-Charge (OC), the Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), or directly to him if necessary.

Earlier in the day, the State Minister inaugurated the newly expanded multi-storey building of the Nesarabad Upazila Parishad. Following the relief distribution, the upazila and municipal BNP units and their associate organisations organised a victory rally marking the July Mass Uprising. A discussion meeting was later held at the upazila auditorium.

The State Minister also visited several development projects in the upazila and instructed officials, public representatives, and project stakeholders to implement the development projects free from corruption while maintaining quality standards. Senior officials of the upazila administration, public representatives, political leaders, and local dignitaries were present at the programme.
