Seven Dead, 23 Injured in Thailand School Shooting

A 14-year-old student opened fire at his home and later at Debsirin School in Nonthaburi, near Bangkok, killing seven people and injuring 23 others in one of Thailand’s deadliest school shootings. Authorities said the teenager first killed his grandparents before attacking the school. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said the victims included the gunman’s grandparents and five teachers. The attacker later died by suicide while carrying more than 30 rounds of ammunition. Nine of the injured remained in critical condition. The shooting began shortly after 9:00 a.m. Bangladesh time, prompting a major police response. Investigators described the attack as deliberate and said many shots struck vital areas. Police have not released the suspect’s name or established a clear motive, although study-related stress is being considered. A seventh-grade student told the BBC that she was speaking with her teacher when the gunman appeared and shot her. She later escaped by climbing over a school fence with classmates. Other students initially mistook the gunfire for firecrackers.

The shooting has renewed debate over gun control in Thailand, where civilian firearm ownership is among Southeast Asia’s highest. Although the weapon reportedly belonged to the shooter’s grandfather, politicians called for stricter regulations. Anutin pledged new legislation further restricting public gun possession.
