Former chief adviser of the interim government Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus and the AB Party have congratulated Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on his election as Bangladesh’s 23rd President.
In a congratulatory message posted on his verified Facebook page on Thursday evening, Dr Yunus said Fakhrul’s more than five-decade political career is closely linked to Bangladesh’s political history. He praised his organisational skills, wisdom, leadership during crises and extensive experience of working with people at the grassroots.
Dr Yunus expressed confidence that, as an academic, experienced politician and principled person, Fakhrul would uphold the dignity of the country’s highest constitutional office and help lead Bangladesh towards greater prosperity, justice and democracy. He also wished the new President good health, long life and success in his duties.
Mirza Fakhrul won the presidential election with 255 votes, while his rival, 11-party alliance candidate Col (retd) Oli Ahmed, received 88 votes.
