Muslim Man Killed in India Over Land Dispute
In the Barabanki district of Uttar Pradesh, a long-standing land dispute turned deadly when a 68-year-old man named Shamser Ali was allegedly killed in a violent attack in Kolwa village, which is under the Subeha police station area, after being run over by a tractor. Nearly 10 more people suffered serious injuries and are still receiving medical care, including local ladies who tried to assist.
On August 16, the altercation broke out as the victim’s family was planting seeds on land that a local court had just given them. According to the victim’s son and main complainant, Mustaq Ali, an armed gang arrived with a tractor to remove the crops. Mr. Mustaq claimed, ‘When we resisted, they attacked us with sticks and deliberately drove the tractor over my father and others’. After the victims were taken to the Haidergarh Community Health Center, Shamser Ali was pronounced dead by the medical staff.
Subeha police filed a complaint under many Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita clauses after the incident against several named suspects, including Raushan alias Shiv Singh and Gulshan Singh, as well as several unnamed people. Barabanki Police verified on social media that five accused had been detained, writing, “Five key suspects are in custody, and an intensive investigation is ongoing.” The incident has caused political outrage, with Azad Samaj Party chairman Chandra Shekhar Aazad denouncing the attack and local officials demanding immediate justice and severe punishment for all culprits.
