S. Jaishankar Silent on Sheikh Hasina’s Extradition, Says Mutual Interests Essential for Sustainable Ties

Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has declined to comment directly on the extradition of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, saying that for India-Bangladesh relations to remain sustainable, they must pass the test of “mutual interests.”
Mr. Jaishankar was asked about Sheikh Hasina’s extradition while speaking at the Economic Times World Leaders Forum on Saturday (August 22). Instead of commenting specifically on the issue, he said that any relationship must serve the interests of both sides and be equally beneficial to the two countries. “I do not expect my neighbours to work only in my interests. Likewise, I want to recognise and respect their interests. I also expect them to respect India’s interests,” Mr. Jaishankar said.
The Indian foreign minister said bilateral relations progress smoothly when the two sides develop areas of understanding and common ground. According to him, mutual interests are the foundation of any deep bilateral relationship, and a long-term relationship cannot be built on the interests of only one side. Bangladesh has long been formally requesting India to extradite Sheikh Hasina. She has been staying in India after being convicted in a crimes-against-humanity case. Although Dhaka has repeatedly demanded her return, New Delhi has yet to announce a final decision on whether she will be extradited.
Mr. Jaishankar’s decision not to comment directly on the Hasina extradition issue is being viewed as significant amid the current state of India-Bangladesh relations. The two countries have differences over several issues, including extradition, border management, trade and security. Mr. Jaishankar’s remarks focused on the need to prioritise mutual interests while seeking understanding on these issues. He said it would be unreasonable to expect one side in a relationship with a neighbouring country to focus solely on its own interests. Instead, he stressed that maintaining a balance between the interests of both countries and reaching an acceptable understanding is the way forward for strengthening bilateral relations.
