Bangladesh Looking for Alternative Sources of Fuel and Energy

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid said the government is seeking alternative and diversified energy sources to address the country’s energy crisis. Speaking at an event in Dhaka on Saturday to mark the upcoming UN General Assembly session and promote Bangladesh, she said overdependence on a single energy source could put major pressure on the economy during wars or global crises.

The government is working with several African countries on energy sources while exploring solar power, waste-to-energy, new LNG sources and the potential of the blue economy. Shama Obaid said the Prime Minister is prioritising solar power. The Prime Minister’s Office has been brought under 100 percent solar power, while similar initiatives are being taken gradually at government offices and establishments.

She said discussions are also underway with China, Japan and other countries on waste-to-energy projects. The government is also working to secure multiple sources for LNG imports. “Economic diplomacy is one of the main priorities of the current government. The government is working to create an investment-friendly environment. To reduce harassment of investors, new initiatives have been taken on the model of a ‘one-stop service’ system and the scope of digital services is also being expanded.”

She said Bangladesh wants to highlight its democratic progress, economic potential, tourism, trade and culture globally. The upcoming 81st UN General Assembly session will also focus on development, climate change, pandemic prevention and nuclear control, while Bangladesh will raise the Rohingya crisis. Shama Obaid said the government aims to bring qualitative changes across sectors and present Bangladesh as a confident, responsible and promising country.
