Oman to Recruit 10,000 Farmers and Fishermen from Bangladesh

Oman will recruit 10,000 workers from Bangladesh, including 5,000 farmers and 5,000 fishermen. A delegation led by Al Sayyid Mohammad Salim Ali Al Said, a member of the Omani royal family, met with Bangladesh’s Foreign Affairs State Minister Shama Obaed Islam at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday (September 9). The State Minister disclosed the information while briefing journalists after the meeting.

Shama Obaed said, “We have spoken with Oman’s Ministry of Agriculture. A delegation from Oman had visited us. Oman will take 5,000 farmers and 5,000 fishermen from us. They have said they will take 10,000 in total. An agreement has been signed in this regard.”

The State Minister said an Omani delegation will visit Bangladesh next month, and the details will be finalised after discussions with the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment.
Regarding the reopening of Omani visas, Shama Obaed said the government is making diplomatic efforts.

“Oman’s visas have been closed for various reasons. This happened during the previous government. We are trying through diplomatic efforts so that Bangladeshis can regularly travel to Oman,” she said. She said the government is focusing on skilled migration and has raised the issue with the Omani government.

“We are emphasising skilled migration. We have raised this with the Omani government. We want more skilled people to be able to go from here and work in different sectors in Oman. They are also interested in this, and the two countries are working on the issue,” she said.

In a press release, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the State Minister discussed ways to further strengthen economic relations between Bangladesh and Oman. The discussions included opening Oman’s labour market to Bangladeshi workers. Mr. Al Sayyid praised the valuable contribution of Bangladeshi workers to Oman’s development and economic activities. He also noted that there is considerable scope for expanding mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries.
