In addition to the poster, the agency released an AI-generated video featuring the character Megatron discussing truck drivers involved in traffic offenses, specifically naming individuals such as Harjinder Singh, Rajinder Kumar, and Jasvir Singh.
Civil rights organizations have strongly condemned the campaign, arguing that it relies on racial profiling and xenophobic targeting. The Hindu American Foundation denounced the initiative as racist and anti-American, pointing out that individuals bearing the surname Singh include Hindus, Sikhs, and lawful US citizens. In a sharp critique, the organization stated that the campaign broadly targets people of Indian descent rather than strictly addressing undocumented status. Commentators also noted the irony of using Optimus Prime to represent the United States, given that the character is canonically an extraterrestrial being within the Transformers narrative.
The Sikh Coalition echoed these concerns, emphasizing that hundreds of thousands of Sikhs in the United States carry the surname Singh and frequently face discrimination based on their distinct physical appearance. Because members of this community hold a significant presence in the American commercial trucking sector, critics argue the messaging inherently smears a broader ethnic demographic. Civil rights groups have officially called for an immediate and thorough investigation into the production and publication of these materials by the federal agency, demanding greater accountability for government-backed media campaigns.
Despite the severe backlash, the Trump administration’s voluntary departure incentive program continues to operate under established federal guidelines. Eligible undocumented immigrants who express a formal desire to leave the country can access structured travel assistance, along with monetary incentives of up to $2,600. While federal officials defend the program as a lawful mechanism to manage immigration enforcement, advocacy groups warn that utilizing culturally coded caricatures and specific ethnic surnames undermines civil liberties and fosters hostility against minority communities nationwide.
