Regarding the Business of Photography and Printing

Question: I run a computer training center along with a photocopy service. I provide computer training and offer photocopying. However, to meet the needs of the residents, I also have to take passport-style photographs. While this is not a photography studio business, I take and print these photos purely out of necessity, as failing to do so might cause customers to go elsewhere. I have even posted a notice stating that unnecessary photos or portraits intended for home display are not taken here. Under these circumstances, is this photography service permissible or impermissible in Islamic law? Can I accept money for taking these necessary photos?

Answer: Photography taken out of necessity, as opposed to photos taken purely for leisure or display, is considered permissible under the principle of necessity in Islamic jurisprudence. Therefore, taking photos under the conditions described in your query may be permissible. Nevertheless, you should continue to seek forgiveness (istighfar).
