Anwara to Become a Twin City

Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) has prepared an action area plan to develop a modern industrial and residential hub in Anwara, centred on the Karnaphuli Tunnel. The “One City, Two Towns” project will cover 7,315 acres and aims to transform the area into a planned, environmentally friendly industrial city.
The plan includes the Chinese Economic and Industrial Zone on 774.4 acres and another 550 acres for industrial development. These zones are expected to create nearly 200,000 jobs. By 2050, Anwara’s population is projected to exceed 724,000.
To support the planned urbanisation, the CDA has proposed 47.8 kilometres of new and upgraded roads, including widening the Anwara-Patiya Road to 160 feet. The plan also includes a truck terminal with a capacity of 1,000 vehicles, a modern bus terminal, seven primary schools, four secondary schools and nine clinics.
The CDA has also earmarked 2,388 acres of agricultural land for preservation to prevent unplanned residential and industrial development. Officials said this would help control the loss of farmland and ensure planned urban growth.
Infrastructure development has already begun at the Chinese Economic Zone, where hundreds of factories are expected to be established with around $1.5 billion in investment. With improved connectivity to Chattogram Port and Matarbari deep-sea port, the area is expected to emerge as a major logistics and economic hub.
