Bangladesh-China ‘2+2’ Dialogue to Be Held Soon: Humayun Kabir
Bangladesh and China will hold a “2+2” dialogue on diplomacy and defence soon, although no specific date has been set yet. State Minister for Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir made the remarks after meeting the Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday. He said the “2+2” dialogue would represent a high level of strategic cooperation between the two countries, with foreign policy and defence cooperation at its core.
Humayun Kabir said, “Under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and his government, Bangladesh is today a highly visible and important country to various global partners. China, one of the most important partners in our region, is now interested in developing a ‘2+2’ relationship where foreign policy and defense cooperation are given special importance.”
He said, “This proves the importance of Bangladesh’s geopolitical position and the significance of our geopolitical vision under an elected government. We will participate in these discussions from a strong position based on the mandate or public support we have received from the people. Initial preparations or groundwork for ‘2+2’ engagement are currently underway for further activities.” The state minister said the talks would begin “very soon” at a mutually convenient time. “China is an important development partner of ours, so we will use this platform positively to discuss and further strengthen our relationship,” he said.
