Bangladesh Stresses Women’s Leadership for Sustainable Peace
Bangladesh has stressed the need to ensure women’s leadership in efforts to establish sustainable peace.
Bangladesh’s position was highlighted by Foreign Affairs State Minister Shama Obaed Islam at the annual ministerial meeting of the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Focal Points Network held at the UN headquarters in New York.
The Foreign Ministry disclosed the information in a press release on Thursday.
The meeting was jointly organised by the Philippines, Italy and UN Women on the sidelines of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly. Discussions focused on strengthening implementation and accountability 25 years after the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security.
The state minister said Bangladesh, as an elected member of the UN Security Council in 2000, played a leading role in supporting the adoption of Resolution 1325. She reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to ensuring women’s meaningful participation in decision-making processes.
She called for greater participation of women in peace processes, integration of the WPS agenda into climate and humanitarian action, and accountability for violence and crimes against women.
The state minister said Bangladesh is advancing work on its second National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security.
She also highlighted the Bangladesh-led “Dhaka Dialogue” initiative to address digital harassment and artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled violence against women.
She invited member states to join the upcoming “Group of Friends.”
