Bangladesh’s Abhi Sets World Record at International Abacus Olympiad, Wins Two Gold Medals

Yasin Tafsir Abhi, a young talent from Jhenaigati in Sherpur, has achieved international recognition after setting a world record for the fastest mathematical calculation at the International Abacus Olympiad. He won two gold medals and secured the titles of ‘Champion of Champions’ and ‘Supreme Champion’ in the two stages of the competition. He was also awarded with a special certificate of honor by the ‘Book of World Records’.

Organised by Brain School, an education partner of the International Olympiad Federation, the competition featured around 1,500 participants from 14 countries. Mr. Abhi competed in the junior category in the first phase of the Olympiad on December 21, 2025. He won the ‘Champion of Champions’ title in that round. In the final phase, held on March 2, 2026, he secured the ‘Supreme Champion’ title, earning two gold medals for his overall performance.

Abacus is a method of performing mathematical calculations using specific techniques. Regular practice can improve children’s calculation skills, concentration, memory and quick decision-making abilities. Mr. Abhi learns abacus online through ‘Edutune’. He has completed the junior level and is currently receiving advanced-level training. He is also developing his spoken English skills and takes an interest in learning different subjects.

A second-grade student at Mymensingh Cambridge Model School, Mr. Abhi is the son of Imran Hasan Rabbi, a media worker, and Jharna Akhter of Jhenaigati upazila in Sherpur. His parents and local residents expressed pride over his international achievement. Mr. Abhi’s father Mr. Imran said, “This achievement of his son has made his family proud. It is a matter of luck for him to receive international recognition as a child of Sherpur. He wants to bring honor to the country by participating in big competitions in the future.”

His mother Ms. Jharna said, “From a young age, Abhi has been very interested in learning about anything. He was also interested in learning abacus.” Those involved in his training said regular practice, concentration and quick calculation skills are essential for success in abacus. They credited Obi’s dedication and eagerness to learn for his performance at the international level. His family hopes he will continue his success and bring further recognition to Bangladesh by participating in larger international competitions.
