Bus Fare Hike Proposed, Notification Expected soon
Bus owners have demanded a fare hike after the recent rise in fuel oil prices. They proposed a 20 percent increase in per kilometer bus fare.
The owners submitted their demand to the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) today. Sources say BRTA has taken up the proposal and started work on fare adjustment.
The new proposal suggests raising city service bus fares by 18 paisa per kilometer. It also suggests raising long distance bus fares by 20 paisa per kilometer. The proposal recommends keeping the minimum fare unchanged at 10 taka for buses and 8 taka for minibuses.
The owners proposed raising long distance bus fares from 2 taka 23 paisa to 2 taka 43 paisa per kilometer. They also proposed raising fares in Dhaka and Chattogram metropolitan areas from 2 taka 53 paisa to 2 taka 73 paisa per kilometer.
The Road Transport Owners Association also proposed a fare hike for minibuses in the DTC area. They suggested raising the fare from 2 taka 32 paisa to 2 taka 52 paisa per kilometer.
Bangladesh Road Transport Owners Association General Secretary Mr. A S M Ahmed Khokon spoke after the meeting. He said owners proposed the fare hike due to rising fuel oil prices. He added that the government may issue a notification within a day or two.
The Fare Adjustment Committee held its meeting at the BRTA Banani office on Monday afternoon. Officials discussed and prepared recommendations on the fare hike at this meeting. The meeting started at 3 PM and ended around 5 PM.
