China’s Diversified Economic Partnership to Further Accelerate Bangladesh’s Development: A.M.M. Bahauddin

Daily Inqilab Editor and president of Bangladesh Jamiatul Modarresin Alhaj A M M Bahauddin has remarked that people from all walks of life in Bangladesh have deep affection and respect for the government, policymakers and people of China. He said ordinary citizens, political parties and social organisations in Bangladesh view friendly relations with China positively. China does not believe in hegemonic policies. Rather, it has strengthened its position in the world through peaceful coexistence and mutual cooperation.
He made the remarks in his opening speech at the ‘China-Bangladesh Political Parties Plus Roundtable’ held at Hotel InterContinental in Dhaka on Wednesday (November 4).
Highlighting various aspects of Bangladesh-China political, economic and diplomatic relations, Mr. Bahauddin said the relationship between the two countries had historically been built on a strong foundation. Important foundations of these ties were laid during the tenures of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. Subsequent governments in both countries had also played a role in advancing the friendly relationship. He expressed hope that the ties would become deeper and stronger in the future.
Referring to the changing global geopolitical situation, the Inqilab editor said recent elections in the United States and subsequent political changes have created new equations in international politics. In this context, China has emerged as an important force in the global economy and politics. Its remarkable progress in artificial intelligence, space research, science and technology has strengthened its position on the world stage. China’s economic influence is also expanding in Africa and other regions, alongside Asia.
Describing Bangladesh-China relations as a reflection of the aspirations of the people, he said the trust and affection of Bangladeshis towards China had made the relationship more people-oriented. The people of Bangladesh considered China a peace-loving and cooperative power. The relationship was not limited to the governments and states of the two countries; it also had deep roots among their peoples.
On regional cooperation, journalist Mr. Bahauddin highlighted important geopolitical issues, including the Rohingya crisis and the proposed China-Myanmar-Bangladesh corridor. He said China had an opportunity to play an effective role in accelerating Rohingya repatriation and strengthening regional connectivity. China’s cooperation in this regard was particularly important for Bangladesh. He also noted that positive statements made by Chinese leaders during their visits to Beijing and Bangladesh had helped strengthen mutual trust between the two countries.
Regarding Bangladesh’s economic development and infrastructural progress, he said it was necessary to reduce excessive dependence on loans from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which come with stringent conditions, and expand alternative avenues of cooperation.
A multifaceted economic partnership with China could further accelerate Bangladesh’s development, he said. Both countries could benefit from cooperation in infrastructure, trade, investment and technology.
He added that mainstream political parties and the people of Bangladesh were positive about maintaining good relations with China. China-Bangladesh friendship could play an important role in national development and international cooperation.
Chinese Communist Party Central Committee International Department Minister Liu Haixing attended the event as the chief guest. Responding to the remarks by Mr. Bahauddin, he expressed gratitude and thanked him. He also expressed hope that the longstanding friendly relations between the two countries would be further strengthened.
