Chinese J-16 Fighter Jets Arrive in Egypt for Joint Military Exercise
China has taken a major step toward expanding its military influence and strategic presence in the Middle East and Africa, with a fleet of People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) fighter jets arriving at an Egyptian air base to participate in the second joint air exercise, titled “Eagles of Civilization 2026.” The fleet includes China’s J-16, one of its most advanced heavy multirole fighter jets. According to the Chinese Ministry of National Defense, the long-range deployment also includes YY-20A aerial refueling aircraft, KJ-500 airborne early warning aircraft and Y-20 strategic transport aircraft.
Intercontinental Long-Distance Deployment
The Chinese Air Force said the fleet covered more than 6,000 kilometers in approximately nine hours, flying over four countries across two continents before reaching Egypt. During the journey, the YY-20A aerial tanker provided in-flight refueling to the J-16 fighter jets, demonstrating China’s growing long-range airpower and overseas deployment capabilities.
Objectives and Significance of the Exercise
The joint exercise is scheduled to take place in Egypt from mid-August until early September. The drills will focus primarily on air combat tactics, air superiority operations, and airborne search-and-rescue missions. Military experts consider the deployment significant because it marks the first time China has reportedly deployed its heavy J-16 fighter jets for an exercise on African soil. During the first edition of the exercise in 2025, China deployed its lighter J-10C fighter jets. The deployment is being viewed as an important development in China’s expanding military partnership with Egypt and its efforts to demonstrate its ability to project airpower beyond its borders. The participation of advanced fighter jets, aerial refueling aircraft, airborne early warning systems and strategic transport planes also highlights China’s growing capacity to conduct complex military operations far from its home territory.
