Flywheel Technology Shows Potential to Generate Electricity Without Fuel Costs in Bogura

An innovative initiative by the Rural Development Academy (RDA) in Bogura has successfully generated electricity on a trial basis using flywheel technology without fuel costs. Authorities say the technology could generate electricity at a cost of only Tk 1.50 per unit.
Following the successful trial of the technology, which does not depend on weather conditions, the authorities have planned to establish a full-scale 1-megawatt power plant at a cost of Tk 25 crore.
The technology demonstrated its effectiveness through a trial electricity generation programme held on Sunday afternoon in the Bandighi area of Erulia in Bogura. The electricity generated during the demonstration powered two pumps and a welding machine.
Before the demonstration, Bogura-6 (Sadar) MP Rezaul Karim Badsha and RDA Acting Director General Dr Md Abdul Majid Pramanik inspected the project.
During the inspection, RDA Acting Director General Dr Md Abdul Majid Pramanik told Inqilab that, according to preliminary calculations, flywheel technology could generate electricity at a cost of only Tk 1.50 per unit.
He said generating 1 megawatt of electricity continuously through solar power requires an investment of more than Tk 100 crore, whereas the same amount of electricity could be generated through flywheel technology with an investment of only Tk 25 crore.
He further said the RDA began working on the technology in 2004, while research after 2010 opened up new possibilities. At present, countries including the United States and China use flywheel technology.
The authorities have already submitted the 1-megawatt power generation project to the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives and the Climate Trust.
After inspecting the project on site, MP Rezaul Karim Badsha expressed satisfaction with the initiative. He said the low-cost electricity generation project holds significant potential and assured that the government would provide all-out support to expand the technology on a larger scale.
RDA Deputy Director and agricultural engineer Dr Monirul Islam, who is involved in the research, told Inqilab that extensive research on the technology has been underway since 2014. The RDA has been conducting its experimental activities on a larger scale since 2025. He said the authorities could make this affordable electricity available for public use if they receive the necessary funding and related equipment.
