Global Diplomatic Push: Xi Sends Message to Trump Ahead of Summit

As the much-discussed summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Mr. Xi Jinping draws closer, Mr. Xi has launched a major diplomatic campaign to strengthen China’s position and influence on the global stage.

He is scheduled to meet Mr. Trump in Washington on September 24. Ahead of the meeting, Beijing is strengthening ties with several influential countries from Eurasia to the Middle East, sending a clear message to the United States: China is not alone and has strong alternative regional and international alliances.

Earlier this year, Mr. Xi spent most of his time in Beijing. However, ahead of his visit to Washington, he undertook diplomatic trips to Central Asia and Egypt. During a meeting with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in Cairo, Mr. Xi proposed measures to establish peace in the Middle East and create a new security framework. Meanwhile, at a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) meeting, Mr. Xi urged the 10 member states to prioritise their own security and prevent any external power from interfering in regional affairs.

Analysts say that amid the trade war, technological competition and global instability, China is primarily showcasing its alternative trade, energy and technology networks. Through this, Beijing is challenging US unilateralism and emphasising a multilateral world order.

Potential Agenda for the Trump-  Xi Summit

Although US President Donald Trump has welcomed the Chinese president’s visit and announced a state dinner, tensions between the two superpowers have not fully eased. Complex issues such as trade tariffs, the Taiwan crisis and competition in artificial intelligence (AI) are expected to play a central role in the meeting.

A large Chinese business delegation is also expected to accompany Mr. Xi to the United States, raising hopes of positive progress in the economic relations between the two countries.
