Govt Adopts ‘Zero Tolerance’ Policy on Air Ticket Irregularities And Syndicates

The government has adopted a “zero tolerance” policy to curb irregularities, artificial shortages and syndicates in the air ticket market. Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M Rashiduzzaman Millat disclosed this in a written reply to a question during the National Assembly session on Sunday. He said the government is taking steps to amend the Travel Agency Act and Civil Aviation Act to keep airfares affordable for expatriate workers. A 10-point circular has also been issued to ensure transparency in ticket sales. Under the new rules, travel agencies must clearly mention their name, licence number and actual selling price on air tickets to prevent ticket black marketing.

The minister said airlines generally set fares through a “dynamic pricing” system. Prices vary depending on factors such as route, booking time, departure date, seat availability, fuel prices, taxes and airport charges. He said the government has also planned special incentives on Biman Bangladesh Airlines tickets for expatriate cardholders. Other proposed facilities include access to the Balaka Lounge, separate immigration channels and priority check-in. The minister said necessary legal and administrative measures are being taken to protect passengers’ interests and ensure transparency in the air ticket market.
