Grameenphone Becomes First Operator to Roll Out Bangla QR

Grameenphone has partnered with Mutual Trust Bank PLC (MTB) to become Bangladesh’s first telecom operator to launch Bangla QR payment services across its branded retail stores. This initiative enables customers to make seamless digital payments directly from their accounts by scanning QR codes at Grameenphone Experience Centers using any bank, Mobile Financial Service (MFS), or Payment Service Provider (PSP) app.

The service uses the national QR standard, allowing transactions via a single merchant code to reduce cash dependency and support Bangladesh Bank’s ‘One Nation, One QR’ vision. Initially rolled out at Experience Centers in Gulshan, Bashundhara Residential Area, and Chattogram’s GEC Circle, the launch event was attended by Bangladesh Bank Deputy Governor Dr. Md. Habibur Rahman, MTB Managing Director and CEO Syed Mahbubur Rahman, and Grameenphone CEO Yasir Azman.

Highlighting the economic impact, Dr. Md. Habibur Rahman stated: ‘Connectivity and technological innovation are key drivers of economic growth and financial inclusion. I commend Grameenphone for taking this step to build a more integrated and efficient digital payment ecosystem in the country.’ Echoing this, Yasir Azman noted: ‘Our partnership with MTB brings this promise to life through Bangla QR, eliminating the need for cash and waiting for small change, while expanding financial inclusion and empowering more people.’

Adding to the collaboration, Syed Mahbubur Rahman remarked: ‘By combining our expertise in payments with Grameenphone’s extensive retail footprint, we are making everyday transactions more convenient and contributing to the widespread adoption of digital payments across the country.’ Through this initiative, Grameenphone aims to accelerate Bangladesh Bank’s national goal of reaching 10 million daily transactions, strengthening an inclusive digital economy.
