Sonargaon’s Historic Boro Sardar Bari Allegedly Damaged During Coke Studio Bangla’s Shoot
Allegations of damage have emerged surrounding the filming of the song “Patar Banshori” from the fourth season of Coke Studio Bangla at the historic Boro Sardar Bari in Sonargaon, Narayanganj. The Sonargaon History, Heritage and Archaeological Resources Preservation Committee claimed that parts of the historic building, including its walls, decorative elements and architectural designs, were damaged during the shooting.
The organization raised the allegations at a press conference held at the Narayanganj Press Club on Saturday (August 29), demanding an independent investigation into the incident. Committee convener, poet and essayist Shahed Kayes, presented a written statement, while artist and cultural figure Rafiur Rabbi also spoke at the event.
According to the committee, filming for the “Patar Banshori” song and a soft-drink advertisement took place at Boro Sardar Bari for around four days. During the shoot, high-capacity electric generators, heavy cameras, lighting and sound equipment were used, allegedly causing damage to various parts of the historic structure. The organization also alleged that a section near the second courtyard was damaged during the filming.
The committee questioned whether a heritage impact assessment had been conducted before allowing filming at the historic site and whether the necessary approvals had been obtained from the Department of Archaeology and the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. It also demanded the disclosure of documents related to filming permissions, financial transactions and records showing the condition of the building before and after the shooting.
The organization has also called for a detailed investigation into the preservation of Boro Sardar Bari. According to the committee, restoration of the building, which had remained in a dilapidated condition for years, began in 2012 and was completed in 2017. The site was opened to visitors in 2018.
The press conference also featured allegations of various financial and administrative irregularities involving the Sonargaon Folk and Crafts Foundation. The committee also alleged irregularities in the allocation of shops at Karupalli. The organization demanded an independent investigation into all the allegations, a special audit and an urgent technical assessment of Boro Sardar Bari by heritage conservation experts. It also called for legal action if anyone is found responsible for damaging the historic structure.
