History of the BIRDEM Dental Department and Dr. Mohammad Ibrahim

Professor Dr. Arupratan Chowdhury
Dr. Mohammad Ibrahim, the visionary founder of BIRDEM General Hospital, significantly transformed healthcare in Bangladesh by acknowledging that treating diabetes requires addressing systemic problems, which led to the founding of the hospital’s pioneering dental care department. In the 1980s, Dr. Ibrahim personally managed the establishment of a specialist dental facility, bringing in specialized dentistry when there was no such infrastructure, based on his knowledge that oral health and metabolism are closely related. The department’s founder recalls the beginning of this journey, saying, ‘Upon returning to BIRDEM, he sat in his office and directly called the then-Minister of Health to bring me to BIRDEM,’ which marked the start of a forty-year dedication to diabetic oral healthcare.
The department’s physical establishment started with basic but determined methods, overcoming severe resource shortages by importing equipment through historic international partnerships. The department gradually grew after obtaining a specialist dental chair and Bangladesh’s first CT scanner through a Japan-Bangladesh Joint Collaboration Program. Initially, government deputation orders were used to get part-time services. When the founding clinician recalls Dr. Ibrahim’s active engagement at this time, he remembers being asked, ‘What sort of dental chair do you want? Write it down here,’ which encouraged a lifelong dedication to the hospital’s purpose and opened the path for major clinical operations.
The department head showed an enormous amount of dedication by deciding to work full-time at BIRDEM on the day he would have finished his 25-year government career. Respect for Dr. Ibrahim’s ethical ideology was the motivating factor behind this historic decision, which led to the rejection of several attractive proposals from other prestigious hospitals around the nation. The physician remains stubbornly connected to BIRDEM, noting, ‘My endless respect for Dr. Ibrahim, deep love for this institution, and unwavering commitment to treating diabetic patients prevented me from going anywhere else,’ rejecting profitable options to prefer patient welfare.
The dentistry department emerged as a center of intense academic research under Dr. Ibrahim’s constant guidance, examining crucial relationships between diabetes, periodontal disorders, tobacco use, and metabolic control. These results led to a PhD in antioxidant therapy from Dhaka University’s Institute of Nutrition and Food Science after being presented at international diabetic and dentistry conferences in over fifteen to twenty nations. The World Health Organization and International Diabetes Federation’s historic 2011 recognition of periodontal disease as the sixth outcome of diabetes aligns with this scholarly pattern, which directly verifies Dr. Ibrahim’s early predictions.
In its tenth academic year, BIRDEM’s dental section has grown from a single department to a full dental college with several specialized sections. The university ensures high-quality care that satisfies worldwide standards by producing 40 to 50 qualified dental surgeons each year in addition to experts with advanced degrees like FCPS, MS, and PhD. The faculty emphasizes that ‘research has proven that if there is any inflammation or infection in the mouth, such as periodontal disease, dental decay, or oral ulcers, diabetes remains uncontrolled,’ highlighting the clinical necessity of these treatments and making oral hygiene an essential element of diabetes treatment.
Dr. Ibrahim’s daily routine showed exceptional discipline, empathy, and careful attention to institutional operational detail, in addition to his administrative and clinical achievements. Every morning between 7:00 and 7:30 AM, he visited the hospital wards, cabins, and outdoor departments, keeping an eye on patient care, immediately fixing staff mistakes, and ensuring complete punctuality. The department head describes an incident in which Dr. Ibrahim saw a broken desk lock and called maintenance right away, saying, ‘Why did we build a maintenance department? Never let such work pile up; complete it right away,’ while also cleaning up stray cotton off the stairs.
Dr. Ibrahim skillfully brought brilliant people together while establishing a balance between strict discipline and sincere compassion. His unique magnetic presence and parental warmth inspired absolute loyalty. I learned invaluable lessons about institutional leadership from observing his exceptional ability to get essential contributions and inform senior visitors about metabolic problems. ‘I consider myself blessed to have crossed paths with this philosopher’s stone in my lifetime,’ the senior doctor says, reflecting on these early experiences. He notes that BIRDEM’s enormous achievement was made possible by his outstanding personality and sympathetic heart for patients.
The Bangladesh Diabetic Association and BIRDEM Hospital’s worldwide position as global role models for diabetes treatment illustrates a level of healthcare service that is exceptional worldwide. The top leadership of the organization regularly remarks that if a medical scientist of Dr. Ibrahim’s quality had been born in Britain or America, he may very easily have won worldwide awards like the Nobel Prize, having observed international standards throughout several global congresses. His constant efforts were motivated by a straightforward but fundamental truth: he found endless satisfaction in being able to help vulnerable diabetic patients in a meaningful and transformational way.
The widened medical and educational horizons of BIRDEM continue to spread a powerful symbol of humanitarian service, integrity, and clinical quality in national and international arenas, upholding Dr. Ibrahim’s lifelong principles. Every graduating dentist and patient he treats continues his visionary leadership heritage, satisfying everyone’s expectation that his unique philosophy will remain for centuries. Reflecting on this lifetime commitment, the founding physician comes to the conclusion that treating patients and maintaining ties to this organization continue to be among the greatest rewards and accomplishments of a remarkable career.
