Mahanagar Express Arrives in Cox’s Bazar for First Time with 965 Passengers

The Mahanagar Express, recently extended to the Dhaka–Cox’s Bazar route, arrived in Cox’s Bazar for the first time on Tuesday with 965 passengers. Station officials welcomed the passengers when the train reached Cox’s Bazar Iconic Railway Station at around 7:30am. The train later departed for Dhaka at 9:50am with 824 passengers.

On Monday night, Railways Minister Sheikh Robiul Alam inaugurated the extended Dhaka–Cox’s Bazar service of the Mahanagar Express at Kamalapur Railway Station in the capital. During the event, he called for social resistance alongside administrative measures to prevent crimes such as ticket black marketing and stone-throwing at trains.

Zainal Abedin, station master of Cox’s Bazar Iconic Railway Station, said the Mahanagar Express left Dhaka on Monday night and reached Cox’s Bazar at around 7:30am on Tuesday after stopping at several stations.
The service has been extended to the Dhaka–Cox’s Bazar route to handle the additional passenger pressure during the tourist season.

According to the new Bangladesh Railway timetable, the Mahanagar Express will leave Dhaka for Cox’s Bazar every day at 8:30pm and arrive at its destination at 6:00am the following day. On the return journey, it is scheduled to leave Cox’s Bazar at 9:00am and reach Kamalapur Railway Station in Dhaka at 6:30pm. The train’s weekly off day is Sunday.

The new service will allow passengers from intermediate areas, including Narsingdi, Bhairab, Brahmanbaria, Cumilla and Feni, to travel directly to Cox’s Bazar. It is expected to make travel easier for tourists and have a positive impact on Cox’s Bazar’s tourism industry, hotel and motel businesses, and local economy.
