Mild Earthquake Hits Dhaka, Epicentre in Narsingdi

A mild earthquake was felt in Dhaka and surrounding areas early Monday morning. According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the earthquake measured 3.0 on the Richter scale.

The tremor occurred at around 5:32am on Monday (August 17). In its earthquake bulletin, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department said the epicentre was in the Shibpur area of Narsingdi, approximately 47 kilometres northeast of Dhaka. The earthquake originated at a depth of 10 kilometres beneath the Earth’s surface. The low-intensity earthquake caused brief tremors in several areas, including the capital and its surrounding regions. However, no casualties or damage have been reported so far.

It is worth noting that Shibpur and surrounding areas of Narsingdi fall within one of Bangladesh’s active earthquake-prone zones. The Bangladesh Meteorological Department regularly monitors earthquakes across the country and maintains records of seismic activity.
