No Favorable Environment Yet for PM’s India Visit

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that an appropriate diplomatic environment has not yet been established for Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s prospective visit to India. Spokesperson Shahidul Karim stated during a briefing on Sunday, August 16, that although bilateral negotiations have been continuing, the process has encountered obstacles as a result of recent events, most notably Sheikh Hasina’s public meeting in New Delhi on August 5.

Dhaka maintains that before the visit can begin, there must be a mutually trusting environment. Bangladesh has so publicly asked the Indian government to expedite Sheikh Hasina’s and other escaped convicts’ extradition. Her extradition has been a crucial issue in bilateral ties since the International Crimes Tribunal’s judgement.

There is still open communication between the two countries, but no formal date has been set. Following the recent diplomatic engagements of PM Tarique Rahman, Bangladesh’s foreign policy prioritises connections based on equality and mutual interest. Dhaka has stated clearly that before any travel takes place, creating a favourable diplomatic atmosphere and addressing these important issues must come first.
