Pakistan Suspends Iran Border Trade Amid Rising Violence and Security Concerns

Pakistan has temporarily suspended commercial activities with Iran as part of efforts to curb ongoing violence, security concerns, and smuggling along both sides of the border. This suspension has been enforced particularly at the strategically important Taftan and Gabd-Rimdan border crossings in Balochistan province.
According to a report by Al Jazeera, hundreds of freight trucks have been stranded across the border due to this sudden move. Data from the Quetta Chamber of Commerce and Industry (QCCI) indicates that nearly 2,000 trucks are stuck on both ends of the two border crossings, carrying essential goods and export items such as LPG, rice, and fresh fruits. Consequently, local traders and importers are facing severe financial losses.
Islamabad stated that this stringent measure was taken to improve the overall security situation in the border region and restore administrative order. On the other hand, Tehran described the issue as a technical problem, though relevant officials from both countries are currently holding discussions to normalise the situation and reopen the border swiftly. Although passenger movement continues on a limited scale, the complete halt of commercial goods transport has begun to negatively impact the regional economy.
