Pakistan Welcomes International Court Ruling on Indus Waters Treaty

Pakistan has welcomed the Permanent Court of Arbitration’s unanimous decision to reject India’s unconstitutional and unilateral decision to keep the Indus Waters Treaty in abeyance. This landmark decision by the international court in The Hague, Netherlands, is seen by Islamabad as a significant diplomatic win for its position.

The court clearly confirmed that the landmark 1960 Indus Waters Treaty is still fully functioning and legally binding on both nations, according to a response from Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The court’s decision strengthened Pakistan’s long-standing position that no international bilateral pact may be arbitrarily withdrawn or canceled by one side.

According to the statement, India shall follow the rulings of the institutional framework for dispute resolution and fulfill all of its international duties under this treaty. The Pakistani government reaffirmed its commitment to upholding Pakistan’s legal rights under the Indus Waters Treaty. Notably, the court allowed the water-sharing deal to stay in effect and urged compliance with its provisions after noticing India’s attempts to suspend it under several excuses, including cross-border tensions.
