PM directs energy secretary to resolve gas crisis
Prime Minister Mr. Tarique Rahman has directed Energy Secretary Md Ziaul Haque to take necessary measures to tackle the severe gas crisis. He summoned the energy secretary yesterday, Thursday, to learn about the causes of the crisis and the current supply situation.
A source at the Energy Division said the prime minister sought an update on the country’s fuel supply situation from Ziaul Haque at a meeting yesterday morning. He instructed the secretary to resolve the problem quickly. However, no details were available about the informal meeting. Meanwhile, an LNG cargo arrived at Summit’s LNG terminal around 4pm yesterday. However, the new cargo is unlikely to immediately add more gas to the national grid, as Summit’s terminal is currently supplying gas at its maximum capacity. As a result, the authorities must wait for another cargo to increase supply.
Petrobangla officials said another LNG cargo is scheduled to arrive in the country on August 23. Once it arrives, gas supply from Excelerate Energy’s terminal can resume. Until then, there is no scope to increase the supply of gas from LNG to the national grid. Amid the crisis, the Energy Division held a meeting with the Finance Division yesterday afternoon over LNG imports and financing. Officials discussed ways to increase gas supply quickly.
