PM Is a Wise Leader, Decision on India Visit Rests With Him: Dinesh Trivedi

Asked whether a favorable environment has been created for Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s visit to India, Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi said, “The decision on the visit depends entirely on the Prime Minister. He is a very intelligent person, a leader of the people. So I think it should be left to the Prime Minister.” Also, Indian High Commissioner to Dhaka Dinesh Trivedi met Speaker of the National Assembly Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram to invite the Speaker of the National Assembly of Bangladesh to visit India on behalf of the Speaker of the Lok Sabha of India. The meeting was held at the Speaker’s office in the National Assembly on Wednesday. During the meeting, they exchanged views on the visit of the parliamentary delegation to expand Bangladesh-India bilateral relations, the Rohingya crisis and repatriation, sports and cultural exchanges. After the courtesy call, he answered questions from journalists.
Speaker of the National Assembly Hafiz Uddin Ahmed said that the relationship between the people of the two countries should be the basis of India-Bangladesh relations. This relationship will move forward on the basis of mutual respect and independent sovereignty. He said that Bangladesh-India relations have always moved forward through various tensions. This historical relationship has changed in the context of different times.
The Speaker said that the Awami League government has undermined the democratic rights of the people through the rigged elections of 2008, 2014, 2018 and 2024. The path to democracy has been smoothed again through the mass uprising of the students and the public in 2024. He said that during Sheikh Hasina’s rule, India and Bangladesh had only a government-centric relationship.
Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi said that the Indian government is interested in building people-centric relations between the two countries. The current government is working to fulfill the aspirations of the people by building people-to-people relations. The High Commissioner, on behalf of the Speaker of the Lok Sabha of India, invited the Speaker of the National Parliament of Bangladesh to visit India. He stressed the importance of exchange of visits of parliamentary delegations between India and Bangladesh. At that time, representatives of the Indian High Commission, the Secretary of the National Parliament Secretariat and concerned officials were present.
Referring to the friendly relations between Bangladesh and India, Dinesh Trivedi said, “I have no doubt that whatever is necessary will be done for the sake of friendly relations.” He also commented that the intentions of the two countries are people-centric.
