Prime Minister Calls For Pollution-Free Rivers And Livable Environment

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has asked residents to take personal responsibility alongside government measures to maintain clean rivers and a livable environment for future generations. On Sunday afternoon, he presided over an executive review meeting at the Secretariat, emphasizing that rather than depending just on official orders, environmental protection necessitates active engagement from every worker in their various roles.

The discussion was largely focused on solutions for addressing severe pollution in the Buriganga, Turag, Dhaleshwari, Balu, and Shitalakkhya rivers, as well as the related canals and drainage systems. The main concerns were proper rubbish disposal, river conservation, restoring navigability, and speeding the construction of Dhaka’s circular canal. To increase the effectiveness of conservation efforts, the PM instructed authorities to accelerate the execution of current action plans and improve cooperation across relevant ministries, departments, and agencies.

Local Government Minister Dr. Abdul Moyeen Khan, Environment Minister Mr. Abdul Awal Mintoo, Industries and Commerce Minister Mr. Khandaker Abdul Muktadir, Water Resources Minister Mr. Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie, and Shipping Minister Mr. Sheikh Rabiul Alam were among the notable cabinet members present at the meetings. To coordinate institutional action, high-ranking state officials, the Principal Secretary, Navy representatives, and the city corporation managers of Dhaka, Narayanganj, and Gazipur also took part.
