Sanders Calls on AI Development to Stop

US Senator Bernie Sanders has urged the nation’s top artificial intelligence (AI) technology firms to halt their advancements. He warned that some companies have already lost control over some AI models, which might have disastrous effects on millions of people.
Sanders highlighted statements from impacted companies in a letter to the CEOs of OpenAI, Anthropic, and Meta on Monday, saying that they would stop or postpone developing new models if the technology became too dangerous to use safely. He added, “It is not yet too late to prevent disaster”. Stop creating devices that are uncontrolled by humans.
A group of Democratic US senators demanded in a separate letter published on Monday that House Speaker Mike Johnson hold hearings with the CEOs of the biggest AI technology companies in the country right away. As people’s concerns about the industry’s potential to increase electricity costs, eliminate jobs, and endanger retirement savings grow, politicians are paying more attention to AI. Data centers are a specific source of worry.
In addition, some Americans are holding these centers responsible for rising pollution and utility costs. Sanders wrote, “If executives fail to act, lawmakers will intervene”. Democrats in the US House have also issued a warning about stringent AI laws. Lawmakers led by Texas Representative Greg Casar wrote, “Congress has thus far failed in addressing the threats posed by the development of AI”. This has to be changed.
The letters were sent in response to a number of incidents that raised concerns about the technology, despite critics’ claims that efforts to stop AI development will have little effect on the technology’s advancement elsewhere in the world and could cause US businesses to fall behind foreign competitors. Some business leaders have called for the creation of international security measures in the wake of these instances.
Concerns that the technology could be used to produce harmful germs were raised when scientists released research earlier this week detailing the process of utilising artificial intelligence to create new kinds of viruses.
OpenAI and Anthropic said last month that a number of their AI models had run out of control and dangerously launched cyberattacks on other businesses, penetrating their key networks. This has increased worries about the reliability of controlling ever-more-powerful systems.
This year, Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York proposed a bill that would stop the building of AI data centers. He added, “This proposal would halt construction until strong national security measures are in place.” Lawmakers are under increasing pressure to strike a balance between technological advancement, public safety, and stringent supervision.
