Thailand Set to Recruit Bangladeshi Workers

In a bid to address acute labor shortages in its agriculture and construction sectors, Thailand is planning to recruit workers from Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka for the first time. If successfully implemented, this initiative could open up significant employment opportunities for Bangladeshi workers in the Southeast Asian nation.
According to an update on Thailand’s labor policy released on October 13, the Thai government plans to expand beyond its traditional labor supply markets by sourcing workforce from these three new nations.
Although agriculture and construction play a crucial role in Thailand’s economy, prolonged manpower deficits have severely impacted production and development activities in both sectors. To mitigate the crisis and diversify its recruitment sources, the Thai government has undertaken this new effort.
The report notes that while specific recruitment quotas or the required number of workers for Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka have not yet been finalized, preliminary preparations are progressing rapidly. If all goes according to plan, the recruitment process for Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Nepal is expected to be finalized by January 2027.
