Dhaka Secures $250M Investment to Create 25,000 Jobs

The Dhaka District Administration has officially handed over 36.7180 acres of land in Keraniganj to establish a new economic zone funded by Hong Kong-based manufacturer Handa Company. Deputy Commissioner Farida Khanam transferred possession of the land to Shaheen Akhter Sumi, Director of the Invest Bangladesh Authority, during a formal ceremony held adjacent to the new bridge near the Sonakanda BSCIC Industrial City in Rohitpur Union. During the event, compensation checks were also distributed to affected landowners, including Md. Rashed, marking a major milestone in advancing the project.

This initiative is driven by Handa Company’s strategic plans to expand its industrial footprint and overall manufacturing operations in Bangladesh through its local entity, Handa (Dhaka) Textile Company Limited. The company specializes in knit textiles, fabric dyeing, and garment manufacturing, and this proposed project entails a substantial investment of approximately 250 million US dollars. Project stakeholders anticipate that the establishment of this industrial facility will enhance the country’s ready-made garment sector while significantly expanding local trade, infrastructure development, and commercial operations across the Keraniganj region.

Highlighting the economic impact of the project, Deputy Commissioner Farida Khanam emphasized during the ceremony that economic zones play a crucial role in advancing national industrialization, driving foreign investment, and generating employment. ‘We hope that through the establishment of this economic zone, the investment environment in Keraniganj will expand further,’ she stated, adding that the emergence of new industrial enterprises will increase employment and accelerate local socio-economic development. She further noted that the venture will unlock new commercial possibilities and contribute directly to national economic growth.

The project, titled ‘Construction of Economic Zone in Keraniganj Upazila through BEZA,’ spans 36.7180 acres and carries an estimated total cost of BDT 2,10,69,27,915. Officials project that the full realization of Handa’s manufacturing enterprise will generate employment opportunities for around 25,000 people. By combining large-scale job creation with extensive infrastructure development, the project aims to catalyze local employment, ensuring long-term financial stability for nearby communities while expanding Bangladesh’s capacity in industrial textile production.

With the land handover and landowner compensation processes complete, the development of the Keraniganj economic zone has entered an active execution phase. The enterprise is expected to accelerate local socio-economic growth, foster competitive industrialization outside the main capital core, and strengthen overall bilateral investment ties. Stakeholders remain optimistic that the successful execution of this 250 million dollar venture will set a positive precedent for future foreign direct investments in the country’s textile and apparel sector.
