DSE Turnover Crosses Tk 550 Crore

The Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) experienced a notable downturn on Thursday, the final working day of the week, as share prices for the majority of listed companies declined alongside all key indices. Despite the widespread price fall, market participation surged significantly, pushing the daily turnover past the Tk 550 crore threshold. Conversely, the Chittagong Stock Exchange posted gains for the second consecutive session, backed by a rise in the majority of traded equities and its overall index, although its total transaction value saw a steep decline compared to the previous trading session.
The benchmark index of the DSE, the DSEX, shed 15 points to close at 5,417 points, marking a negative trend in four of the last five trading days. Similarly, the blue-chip DSE-30 index slipped by 9 points to end at 2,086 points, while the DSE Shariah index edged down by 3 points to finish at 1,050 points. Out of the total participating institutions on the main bourse, 145 managed to post price gains, 190 suffered losses, and 53 remained unchanged. The market downturn was evident across categories, including high-dividend-paying firms, lower-yield companies, and speculative Z-category stocks.
Notwithstanding the index slump, trading activity on the capital’s exchange showed strong momentum, with turnover rising to Tk 564.62 crore from Tk 440.95 crore in the preceding session, registering an increase of Tk 123.67 crore. Prime Bank emerged as the most traded stock on the floor, generating transactions worth Tk 15.94 crore, closely followed by BRAC Bank with Tk 13.20 crore and Matin Spinning with Tk 10.77 crore. Other notable volume drivers contributing to the day’s turnover included Baraka Patenga Power, Saiham Textile, Summit Alliance Port, Shahjibazar Power, Prime Finance First Mutual Fund, Pubali Bank, and Sonali Aansh.
In contrast to the capital bourse, the port city’s Chittagong Stock Exchange closed in positive territory as advancing issues outnumbered declining ones. Out of 182 traded entities on the CSE, prices of 90 shares advanced, 71 fell, and 21 remained unchanged, steering the overall CASPI index up by 46 points. However, trading volume on the CSE witnessed a sharp reduction, contracting to Tk 17.94 crore compared to Tk 58.40 crore recorded on the previous day. As no individual quotes or statements from official representatives were made, the overall performance highlights a contrasting trend between the nation’s two stock exchanges.
