India’s ‘Generation Alpha’ Students Take to Streets With Demands

Students of Bhatpurwa Samuhi village in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur district staged a protest demanding the construction of a new school building. On Saturday (August 22), they sat outside the school over the long-pending demand and announced that they would not return to their classrooms until a concerned official assured them that their demand would be addressed. The students, from the village located along the Yamuna River, staged a peaceful sit-in in front of the school building. They alleged that the authorities had previously been informed about the need for a new building, but no visible progress had been made. They also said the issue had been raised several times through online platforms.

During the protest, headteacher Priyanka Tiwari urged the students to return to their classrooms. However, they remained firm in their demand. Several students were also seen holding India’s national flag during the demonstration. According to local media reports, part of the school building had earlier been demolished. Classes are currently being conducted in a limited number of rooms, creating difficulties in providing students with an adequate and safe learning environment, according to the protesters. The demonstration over school infrastructure is being viewed as part of a series of recent student protests in Uttar Pradesh. Earlier, around 300 students in Hamirpur walked several kilometres to the district administration office demanding a proper road to their school. In Lucknow, around 250 female students protested over a shortage of teachers and basic facilities. More than 200 students in Unnao also reportedly staged a road blockade over their demands.

In India, the term “Generation Alpha” generally refers to children and adolescents of the latest generation. In these incidents across Uttar Pradesh, students are directly voicing demands concerning education, infrastructure and basic facilities, highlighting several challenges facing the state’s local education system. It was not immediately clear what outcome the protest by the students of Bhatpurwa Samuhi would bring. However, their demonstration has brought their demand for a safe and adequate school building more prominently before the local administration.
